Sashiki

“Sashiki”– is a kind of  asexual breeding of plants. A method that is very popular among Bonsai growers.

A variety of plants can be grown with cutting (sashiho), which replicates the features of the mother plant. This method of planting does not limit to bonsai plants only, it includes vegetables, leafy greens and fruit trees. Horticulturists and farmers love this method of propagation as unlike growing plants from seeds (jissei) or grafting (tsugiki). This method produces new plants that are reliable which is hard to achieve from seeds as each seedling has its own set of features passed down from their parent plants.

To recreate a plant by cutting, you can cut a  branch (edazashi)  or make a cut near the bud (mesashi) or even use the roots to plant in soil (sashidoko).  Plant care varies depending on the season it was planted, way it is potted;clumped, diagonal or in a line.

Planting through cutting has been a popular way for home gardeners to enhance their gardens and increase variety. Some gardeners first keep their cutting in water for a day or two before placing them in soil. Some use rooting hormones before setting them in soil. Some even let their cuttings and shoots root before they are potted in soil (sashidoko).

Different methods can be adapted to grow different plants. For example Sanseveria( mother-in-law toungue) are duplicated by cutting leaf into sections and inserting into soil or letting cuttings grow root in water or burying the roots of mature plant in soil.

This is not a complicated process at all. Every gardener will have a success story to tell of raising plants by cuttings. It is wonderful to see the first bud after the devastating browning and fall of old leaves. The small bud indicates to the grower that the roots has set and the plant is alive. Now you can ease on the water and relax. Let it grow.
